What does it take to be a great DPS?

If you could recommend one piece of advice to a damage dealing class (DPS) in a group, what would it be? What does it take to be a good DPS?

I'm curious to learn what exactly your opinion on this subject is. Remember, keep it short and concise - I want the one thing which makes a good DPS stand out among the thousands. What is it? The way they carry themselves? Their methodical mindset which allows them to stay objective? What about initiative or valor? Are they passive or aggressive? Boring?

I'll start off.

I think it takes patience. Knowledge and understanding are great virtues, but experience and prowess comes from but the fruit of one simple tree: patience.

Your turn!

Know your class, the ins and outs of spells, priorities and the impact of what it is you are doing.

Talk to other people that play the same class.

Be careful, quite often a reckless DPS is dead DPS, think Thaddius and you can add a dead raid.

Last but not least, watch threat, getting agro is one of the worst things a dps can do.

As far as raiding is concerned, I'd say "focus" goes a long way.

The ability to remain awake through an endless repetition of the same serie of spells is the thing that would make a ranged DPS shine.

When you got that, you can use that focus on keeping an eye on the threat meter, on maxing out the damage you do, on situational awareness or on covering up for others with CC.

Focus' the key.

To be a great dps you have to watch your threat. Any fool with half a brain and good gear can pull impressive numbers but when you start getting agro on bosses and wiping raids, you stop being a benefit to the raid and start being a liability. Granted, people doing below 2.8-3K on some fights when you need 3.3K (Sarth + 3D) are also a liability. You need a good understanding of balancing cooldowns, which moves to use at which time, and you also need to be able to focus as the person above me said. You need skill but you also need gear. You can only pull so much dps until gear begins to outshine skill.
