So today is my birthday. September 8, 11:52AM. It's an exciting day, though I had little to look forward to honestly. I have work this afternoon & wasn't expecting any kind of a cake. Oh, was I wrong — Oreo ice cream cake, for the win!
On another note,
World of Warcraft is due for a birthday in a few months, too. Most are speculating the expansion,
Wrath of the Lich King, will be out in November (the same birth month).
Amazon is reporting that it's on pre-order sale now, and I have it in my cart, but what ever happened to the
Collector's Edition stuff that we have come to know?
In any case, the latest warrior changes & the great shift from tanking with threat to tanking through damage is bound to turn some heads. I know mine is already spinning a 360 like an owl. Let's look at a couple of the new, hard-to-believe, changes coming our way thus far:
- Defensive Stance - No longer suffers a -10% damage penalty.
- Warbringer (talent) - Talent to use Charge in any stance, even in combat.
The penalty removal on
Defensive Stance marks the change from threat-building to damage-dealing as a Protection warrior. That's pretty simple.
But the talent Warbringer, which allows
Charge to be used in combat & in any stance, really throws me for a loop. Charge, in its current form, could be used numerous times in Berserker Stance to simply stun a person. Granted diminishing returns, which it shares with Concussion Blow & Intercept (among all other controllable stuns from other classes), it is still powerful (mostly in 2v2 Arena). Intercept one target, Charge back to the previous hostile target. This is just one example. How about when tanking? Charge to the boss, for example Murmur in Shadow Labyrinth, then Intervene back to the group. It sure seems like all one would gain is a free, watered-down version of Intercept. The kicker is that you don't have to stance dance & lose rage to use this ability (in its current form, it requires no rage to use & generates 15 upon use). How about that?
The day everything you thought you knew changes. However, a few things shall remain the same. Let's go over a few things that we know so far:
It's beneficial to have at least two sets of gear with two different objectives in mind: survival & threat. This isn't going to change, read on.
The way we tank is changing, but it's the same game. Discipline your rotations, be aware of your surroundings, & learn the fights.
The past was about threat building, but damage dealing to create threat is the future. Class trademarks such as Shield Slam, Revenge, & Sunder Armor are here to stay.
